Juki TL-2000Qi from KathyQuilts.com

The Juki TL-2000Qi is the best straight stitch sewing machines you can buy for under $1,000.

We have been selling Juki sewing machines for about eight years. We have had really good luck with the Juki TL-98E and then liked the TL-98Q even better. It was a very reliable machine that we only had to repair a handful of them over the five years that we sold it. Juki is not offering the 2000Qi and 2010Q. Juki has made some really nice improvements with the 2000Qi and 2010Q models. The 2010 has a sub-tensioner for the thread and includes two freehand quilting feet. The 2000Qi only comes with one hopping foot. There is only about $50 difference between the two Juki models.

Previous models of the Juki TL-Series had two monsterously huge foot pedals. The new ones have a regular size foot pedal that lets you actuate the thread cutter by pressing down with the heel of your foot. These machines are great for piecing quilts, finishing the binding, or just about any general purpose sewing task. Since we focus mostly on selling and supporting Grace quilting frames we will focus more on the quilting abilities of the Juki TL-2000Qi and TL-2010Q.

Juki is a Japanese company that is a world leader in making industrial sewing machines for years. They now have a line of machines for the consumer that has the speed and durability of a commercial sewing machine but is more user friendly. These machines are the best machines for quilting on the Grace frames that we have found. There are other machines that have a longer throat length, 16 to 18 that we won't talk about be because of the price difference. We are talking about sewing machines that sell for around $1,000 in it review.

The TL-2000Qi or TL-2010 are machines that are made for the home sewer. Here are some reasons why it works best on the Grace Frames:

  • The thread cutter can be operated from a button that is located on the Grace Speed Control that will come with your frame. This really is nice because if you are working on a large quilt block that you can't quilt all in one pass, then you can break it up into smaller chunks. You mark it out, quilt what you can reach, stop the machine, hit the thread cutter button, move over to the next part you are going to quilt, then start quilting again. It really makes short work of quilting. Other machines don't work as well.
  • The Juki works better with the Grace Speed Control or Grace SureStitch - stitch length regulator than the other brands of machine
  • The Juki has the thumb screw that holds the needle on the left side. Some of the other machines have it on the right side. If you bump the take up rail that holds your quilt on it, the needle can loosen and fall out.
  • The Juki runs very smoothly. 1500 Stitches per minute is pretty fast. They are a few other machines out there that run a little faster, but for the money the Juki is the best value.
  • Very high reliability. We haven't had to repair more than a handful of the Juki TL-98Q's that we have sold over the past three or four years. The new Juki's will have the same quaility as the Juki's we have sold in the past. Since you have to oil your Juki, the bearings last longer than many of the other machines. If you keep your Juki clean it will last for several years without needing service.
  • The needle threader is very nice
  • The feed dog drop lever works very well. Janome 1600 doesn't even come with a feed dog drop feature. You have to use a plate that covers the feed dogs. The plate many times will keep coming off.
  • Better quilting feet than other manufacturers machine with similar throat length
  • Great machine for piecing and binding your quilts
